This Sunday School lesson helps children understand what the Bible is and why God gave it to us. Students will learn that the Bible is God's Word and that through it, God reveals who He is, what He has done, how much He loves us, and how we can know and follow Him.
Children will understand that the Bible is God's special book, and it helps us know who God is.
The Bible is God's special book that shows us who He is.
Supplies
A Bible
A flashlight or small lamp
A blanket or box to hide an object
Printable activity sheet
Crayons or markers
Place an object under a blanket or inside a box. Ask the children:
"Can you see what is inside?"
"How could we know what is hidden?"
Let a child remove the blanket or open the box.
Say: "Before we opened it, we could not see what was inside. But when it was shown to us, we could know what it was. The Bible is a little like that. God shows us who He is through the Bible."
Hold up a Bible.
Say: "This is the Bible. The Bible is God's Word. It is not just any book. God gave us the Bible so we can know Him."
Ask:
"Who made the world?"
"Who loves us?"
"Who sent Jesus?"
Say: "The Bible tells us the answers. The Bible tells us that God made the world. The Bible tells us that God loves us. The Bible tells us that God sent Jesus to save us."
Show the flashlight or lamp.
Say: "Psalm 119:105 says God's Word is like a lamp. What does a lamp do?"
Let children answer.
Say: "A lamp helps us see where to go. The Bible helps us know what is true. It helps us know God and follow Him."
Repeat these together:
"The Bible is God's Word."
"The Bible shows us God."
"The Bible tells us about Jesus."
"The Bible helps us follow God."
"God wanted people to know Him. God did not stay hidden. He showed us who He is. He showed His power when He made the world. He showed His love by caring for people. Most of all, He showed us Himself through Jesus. The Bible tells us these true stories so we can know God."
What is the Bible?
Who does the Bible tell us about?
